Courtnay Tyus

Executive Director of Development & Institutional Advancement

Ms. Tyus, daughter of a retired kindergarten teacher and sales professional, grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and came to CHAD in 2004. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in General Arts from Villanova University and has minors in Psychology and Sociology. Ms. Tyus continued her education earning a Juris Doctor degree with an emphasis in labor and employment law from the Villanova University School of Law. She worked at AND 1, the Paoli, PA based basketball apparel and footwear company, as the organization’s first Director of Human Resources and later as the Director of Corporate Recruiting and Director of Social Compliance.

Ms. Tyus has received national and local recognition for her work at CHAD. In February 2011, she was chosen as one of TheGrio’s 100: History Makers in the Making. TheGrio is a subsidiary of NBC Universal that covers news and events that have a unique interest and/or serious impact inside of the national African American audience. TheGrio’s 100 History Makers in the Making is an exclusive list honors Black History month by highlighting the next generation of African-American history makers and industry leaders who have the potential to make a difference in the lives of all American. Lori Wilson, host of NBC Philadelphia’s NonStop, later interviewed her. Most recently, Ms. Tyus was acknowledged for her work at CHAD as one of the September issue of Main Line Today’s “2011 Women on the Move” – 24 women recognized for making an impact locally and beyond.

Ms. Tyus has always had a creative and entrepreneurial spirit. She started her jewelry design business, stellagrace jewelry, in 2003 and today still enjoys creating custom pieces. She is also a Silpada Designs Representative and sells beautiful handcrafted sterling silver jewelry via home shows. Ms. Tyus has been an avid volunteer for the National MS Society and has participated in four of the NMSS’s 50-mile MS Challenge walks, she has also served as a literacy coach for elementary school students through In2Books, is Co-Founder of the Jeffrey M. Shumake Memorial Scholarship Fund, and recently held positions on the board of directors of the ACE Mentor Program in Philadelphia and the Women’s Resource Center in Wayne. Her most recent volunteer effort includes consulting with fellow Villanovan, Carrie Coppola McNamara, and Villanovan and former NBA basketball player, Doug West, for the benefit of the Doug West Endowment Fund.

When she is not designing/selling jewelry or volunteering her time, Ms. Tyus is most likely to be found spoiling her amazing three nephews, Lee, Julian, and Ty, spending time with family and friends, or sitting behind the home team bench at a Villanova basketball game!
